Boujee & Broke

Tyra Teasley

What is boujee? According to Urban Dictionary, boujee is defined as aspiring to be a higher class than one is. I had to laugh out loud at that—and hopefully you, too, find humor in the word boujee. There is no shame in being boujee.

If you know boujee, you love boujee. My friends and family have called me the boujee one so much that I took on the title “Boujee Queen.” Personally, I do not see anything wrong with aspiring to be more or want more on a budget. The number one reason I am proud of my skills to be boujee is because I make broke look so good! If you too want to be boujee, you will find enjoyment in how I financed a trip to Seattle. Note that I’m no travel agent. I’m just a thrifty woman living life on a budget.

Since my favorite season is slowly approaching, I feel the urge to take a trip for self-care, to breathe, and to clear my mind of clutter. The scent of autumn can provide a much needed emotional shift as “hot girl summer” comes to a close. I have an obsession with Seattle and its outdoor activities, and this makes fall the perfect season to go.

Side note: after watching the TV series Grey’s Anatomy, I fell in love with Seattle.

Although I want to get to Seattle and ball out, the truth is, I will be balling on a budget. Yes, I said it. A high-classing, flossing, and balling-on-a-budget trip to enjoy nature, snap pictures, and have a nice night on the town. Seattle can be expensive. Look in the right places, though, and there are plenty of free ways to spend time in Emerald City without wiping out your emergency funds.

The trip will consist of two days of inspiration and fun. The first tip to saving money on the flight was flying out on a Thursday and only pack what I could fit into a backpack which was hygiene products, two pairs of leggings, oversized t-shirts, heels, a black dress, and a camera. Don’t worry, wear tennis shoes on the plane, because you can’t do Seattle without tennis shoes.

The next area I picked to save money was with booking a bed at a hostel. A hostel is a form of low-cost, short-term shared sociable lodging where guests can rent a bed. As I read the reviews it was often compared to staying in a college dorm. I thought it would be a great experience to meet other travelers and also save me a few hundred dollars. Plus breakfast is provided so that saves on food money!

As far as traveling around Seattle, if I am not close to public transportation, I plan on using a new app I found: TURO. The app allows individuals to rent their car out, similar to how Airbnb lets people rent out their houses or rooms. The average cost I found was 20–30$ a day with 200 miles per day. Of course, there is always the option to Uber, Lyft, or taxi, but I will feel more comfortable and safe if I drive myself around. And it will save money in the long run.

Most of the day I plan to just sightsee and go to the top free places to visit in Seattle. Below is a list of a few free places I found by googling:

  1. Relax a moment at Waterfall Garden Park
  2. Stroll through Olympic Sculpture Park
  3. Take a hike at Discovery Park

Those are just a few places I was able to find that are totally free. If you are a nature freak, as I am, these should be great places to find peace of mind.

Now earlier do you recall the black dress I packed in my backpack? Well, this is where “Queen Boujee” kicks in. The black dress was for dinner and I believe what we feed our bodies is very important, so this is where I splurged a bit. Now, you are totally free to spend more money in your area of comfort but food, red wine, and live music is mine!

According to The Eater 38 lists, these restaurants are essential Seattle restaurants:

  1. Cafe Juanita (Italian)
  2. Cafe Munir (a vegetarian's dream)
  3. Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley (live music)

I most likely will be visiting Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley for the food, wine, and jazz. I also plan to visit Pike Place Market, because it is one of the longest-running farmer’s markets in the US.

Yet, we are all free to have our own desired location and itinerary for a broke and boujee trip to free our minds of clutter. Following these tips, and with all the money you have saved, you can enjoy that lavish life that we all love while enjoying that Boujee lifestyle. If you have read this far, I hope you are inspired to go plan your most boujee-est trip ever, BUT on a budget.

If you feel comfortable, share with us below where you would go to escape from reality and free yourself of cluttered thoughts?

Located in Pasadena, TX, is the Pasadena Jail, and on this page , you can know how many inmates stay out their full terms in prison or be held temporarily until they are routed to another prison in the state. One of the biggest concerns and approaches that Pasadena Jail staff is taking in recent years is the statistics surrounding prison inmates and reducing sexual assault at their facility, and the role of prison staff in preventing sexual assault at Pasadena Jail for it is crucial. It is essential for staff to create a culture of zero-tolerance for sexual assault and to hold perpetrators accountable for their actions. By actively working to prevent sexual assault, prison staff can create a safer environment for inmates and ensure that justice is served.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline estimates that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men experience domestic violence. That is roughly 33.3% and 25%, respectively. If so many people in our community are being affected by domestic violence, then why aren’t we talking about it? Although Black people are disproportionately affected by this detrimental disease, it has somehow become ingrained in the very root of our cultural identity. Every day there are media headlines being posted on social media about celebrity couples engaging in physical violence. Rap songs are glorifying toxic masculinity including the oversexualization and objectification of women. Even frustrated parents are turning to physical punishments to discipline their children. In August 2022, rapper Blueface and his girlfriend, Chrisean Rock, got into a physical altercation in Los Angeles. This incident took the media by storm. Thousands upon thousands of people flooded comment sections with jokes and memes, essentially making light of the situation. Many may think of the story as comical, but domestic violence is never funny. It is a community issue that has plagued Black families for generations. The reason that this issue continues to permeate is due to the lighthearted way that Black people discuss serious topics. Statistically, we face higher cases of poverty, racism, low educational attainment, and domestic violence. This is likely due to the historical context in which Black people have existed in this country. When you live in a country where racism and sexism are rooted in the cultural context and institutional processes, it can make other issues seem less important or less dire, but domestic violence is indeed life or death. By having open dialogue and calling out problematic comments and jokes, we can start to make positive changes in our community and ensure the success of future generations. Disagreeing with your significant other is a normal part of any healthy relationship. However, name-calling, intimidation, stalking, sexual violence, physical violence, financial abuse, and emotional abuse are not. You are deserving of healthy, honest, and stable relationships free from the ugliness and toxicity of abuse. Let’s change the conversation and bring awareness to domestic violence and sexual assault. If you or someone you love are in an unhealthy relationship, please consider asking for help. To learn more about domestic violence visit: http://thehotline.org/

A Gen Alpha's take on Women's History Month
By Prentis Grayson 01 Feb, 2022
Black History Month (formerly known as African American History Month), originated in 1976, when it was officially recognized by then-President Gerald Ford during the United States Bicentennial Celebration, but its celebration began many years before. It's important to acknowledge that the history of Black Americans began many decades earlier. In this article, we will dive into what Black History Month is, how it started, and what it means to the NWA Center for Sexual Assault.
